7 Simple Tips to Speed Up Your Slow Computer Today

It’s a frustration we’ve all faced: a computer that was once lightning-fast now takes ages to boot up and struggles to open a single web page. Before you start shopping for a new PC, there are several simple steps you can take to reclaim that lost performance. As computer performance experts in Ashland City and Nashville, TN, we're sharing our top seven tips to speed up your slow computer.

1. Disable Startup Programs

Many programs configure themselves to run automatically when you start your computer. While this can be convenient, having too many can dramatically increase boot time and consume valuable system resources. You can manage these programs easily. On Windows, open the Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc) and click on the "Startup" tab. Disable any non-essential programs you don't need running immediately.

2. Clean Up Your Hard Drive

A nearly full hard drive can slow your computer to a crawl. Your operating system needs free space to function correctly. Start by uninstalling programs you no longer use. Then, run the built-in Disk Cleanup tool on Windows to remove temporary files, system logs, and other junk. You can find it by searching "Disk Cleanup" in the Start Menu.

3. Reduce Animations and Visual Effects

Windows includes many visual effects, like animations and shadows, that can look nice but also consume system resources, especially on older hardware. To adjust these, right-click the Start button, go to System > Advanced system settings, and under the "Performance" section, click "Settings." You can then choose "Adjust for best performance" to turn them all off, or customize them yourself.

4. Scan for Malware and Viruses

Malicious software running in the background is a major cause of slowdowns. It can hijack your computer's resources for nefarious purposes. Use a good security program like Windows Security or Malwarebytes to run a full system scan. If you're in the Nashville area and suspect an infection, our virus removal service can provide a deep clean.

5. Update Your Drivers, OS, and Software

Outdated drivers or software can lead to performance issues and security vulnerabilities. Ensure your Windows OS is fully updated by going to Settings > Update & Security. While you're there, check for optional updates, which often include new drivers. Keeping your software updated ensures you have the latest performance improvements and bug fixes.

The most significant speed boost often comes from a hardware upgrade, like an SSD.

6. Change Your Power Plan

Windows has different "power plans" to manage your computer's power consumption. By default, it's often set to "Balanced," which can limit your PC's performance to save energy. If speed is your priority, especially on a desktop, change it to "High performance." You can find this option in the Control Panel under "Power Options."

7. Consider a Hardware Upgrade

If you've tried all the software tweaks and your computer is still slow, it might be time for a hardware upgrade. As we mentioned in our hardware guide, two upgrades provide the most bang for your buck:

  • Upgrading to a Solid-State Drive (SSD): This will make the most dramatic difference in boot times and overall responsiveness.
  • Adding More RAM: If you have 4GB or 8GB of RAM, upgrading to 16GB can significantly improve multitasking performance.
